Custom software
Purpose-built applications when off-the-shelf software does not fit, scoped in writing before work begins. Red's Recipe Manager began as a custom build for a working kitchen.
AI tooling has lowered the cost of custom software, which puts it within reach of a small business. It has also made it easier to ship an application that appears complete but contains unchecked logic and missing safeguards. The important work is identifying what has to be correct, anticipating where a system will fail under real use, and building it to remain reliable. That judgment comes from experience rather than from the tool.
The approach is consistent regardless of project size: identify the manual process that wastes time or causes errors, build a focused system to replace it, and make it usable on the devices people already have. Red's Recipe Manager developed from this approach into a full product.
