The work

Most businesses have software that makes people work harder than it should. Staff copy data between systems by hand, keep a spreadsheet because the main system can't do what they need, or run an entire process out of an email inbox. These problems accumulate quietly until the workaround becomes the job.

Common examples:

• Someone exports to Excel, cleans it, emails it around, people edit their copies, and it all gets loaded back in while everyone hopes nothing broke.
• Email is really the workflow — people tracking where things stand in their inboxes and their heads.
• Every Monday someone rebuilds the same report by hand from a database, spreadsheets, PDFs, and emails.
• One person is the only one who knows how to keep a critical system running.

The fix is usually a focused tool that sits between people and the systems they already use — not another big platform. Often the most useful software is the small thing that makes the existing system easier to live with.

AI as a tool

AI is useful where it makes previously expensive problems cheap to solve: plain-language requests, unstructured documents, data that doesn't line up neatly, rules nobody wrote down. Anything that has to be exact — math, payments, access control, audit records — is built to work the same way every time. The goal is using the right tool for each part of the problem.

Custom software

Purpose-built applications when off-the-shelf software doesn't fit, scoped in writing before work begins. Red's Recipe Manager began as a custom build for a working kitchen and grew into a full product.
